Nicole's Top 5 Priorities for Newport Public Schools

Classroom Art Activity

Strong Academic Achievement

Every student in Newport deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. Strong academic achievement isn’t just about test scores—it’s about preparing students for college, careers, and life beyond the classroom. Our schools should provide rigorous, engaging, and supportive learning environments that challenge students while meeting their individual needs.

This includes investing in early literacy programs, strengthening math and science education, expanding access to technology and learning resources, and ensuring that all students—including English language learners and students with learning differences—receive the support they need to succeed. Career and technical education programs, internships, and partnerships with local businesses also help students explore real-world opportunities and develop skills for the workforce.

Supporting teachers with professional development, tools, and classroom resources is key. When teachers are empowered, students thrive. Achieving strong academic outcomes requires collaboration among families, teachers, and the community, with high expectations, celebration of successes, and early intervention when challenges arise.

Responsible School Budgeting

Fiscal responsibility ensures our schools can thrive today and tomorrow. Our school budget must be managed thoughtfully and transparently, prioritizing the needs of students and teachers without overburdening taxpayers.

I will advocate for careful long-term planning, ensuring that essential programs—classroom instruction, special education, enrichment opportunities, and extracurricular activities—are fully funded. We must make smart investments in staff, curriculum, and facilities while maintaining accountability for every dollar spent. Responsible budgeting means balancing current priorities with future sustainability so that Newport schools remain strong for generations to come.

Supporting Every Student and Teacher

Strong schools depend on supporting both students and the educators who serve them. Every student deserves the resources, programs, and interventions needed to succeed, whether it’s academic, behavioral, or social-emotional support. This includes students with special education needs, English language learners, and those requiring additional guidance to thrive in the classroom.

Equally important is supporting teachers with professional development, classroom resources, and a positive working environment. When educators feel supported, respected, and empowered, they can give their best to every student. I am committed to ensuring policies, budgets, and programs uplift both students and teachers so that all members of our school community can succeed.

Safe, Modern School Facilities

Our students and teachers deserve learning environments that are safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. School facilities impact both student achievement and staff retention, and investing in buildings is an investment in our community’s future.

I will advocate for careful planning and responsible investment in school infrastructure, ensuring classrooms, labs, athletic facilities, and common spaces meet modern educational standards. This includes ongoing maintenance, energy efficiency, accessibility improvements, and thoughtful use of underutilized spaces. Safe and modern facilities help students focus on learning and foster a sense of pride and community in our schools.

Strong Family & Community Engagement

Schools thrive when families, teachers, and the community work together. Engaged parents and community members enhance student learning, support teachers, and strengthen neighborhood connections.

I will prioritize open communication, transparency, and opportunities for families to actively participate in school decision-making. Partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and civic groups can expand learning opportunities, provide mentorship, and connect students with real-world experiences. Together, our community can create a culture where students feel supported, teachers are valued, and everyone shares in the success of Newport schools.
