Nicole's Story
Nicole Shevory is a dedicated public servant, parent, and community leader committed to strengthening Newport’s future through excellent public schools and thoughtful civic engagement. Born and raised on Cape Cod, Nicole spent many summers in Newport and has deep family roots in the city. Her great aunt and uncle, Mersina and Demetrios Hiotas, were longtime owners of the beloved Quality Lunch on Broadway.
Nicole is a proud graduate of Salve Regina University, where she earned both her undergraduate degree and MBA. She has also completed executive education and professional certificate programs through London School of Economics, Harvard University, and American University.
Since 2010, Nicole has served with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, where she has earned a reputation as an accomplished senior leader focused on modernizing government, leading large-scale transformation initiatives, developing policy, managing major budgets, collaborating with labor unions, and improving efficiency and service delivery. Today, she oversees a disability compensation program that delivers more than $190 billion in benefits to over 6.5 million Veterans and their beneficiaries, supported by a workforce of approximately 20,000 claims processors.
Nicole and her husband, John-Paul “JP,” are proud to call Newport home as they raise their two children. As the saying goes, there is the place you are born, and there is the place that you choose, and Newport is the place they have chosen to build their family and future. JP serves as Assistant Athletic Director at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and is deeply involved in the community as a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a local Little League board member. Their oldest child attends first grade at Pell Elementary School, while their youngest is enrolled in the EBCAP Head Start Program. As a parent with children in Newport schools, Nicole understands firsthand how profoundly educational opportunities shape a child’s future and strengthen the entire community.
Nicole has served the community for the past four years on Newport’s Zoning Board and was recently appointed to the city’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee. With many family members and close friends in public education, she deeply values the role schools play in creating opportunity, strengthening families, and building a vibrant community. Nicole believes that a strong public education is one of the greatest gifts a child can receive.
